Music And Social Justice
Wednesday, January 27th, 2021
06:00 PM - 07:30 PM
Storrs Campus Virtual
Music and Social Justice, live virtual panel and small Inter group dialogue on the evening of January 27th, from 6-7:30pm. Please join CO Dialogues as we discuss the critical role that music has played in social justice movements, both historically and recently. Amidst social and political unrest, it is crucial to examine the positive impact music holds in inciting change, assuaging individuals, and motivating bystanders. We will be joined by Robin Attas, Jacob Hertzog, and Thomas Rozinski, three professors with extensive research on the topic.
Robin Attas
Robin Attas is a white settler music theorist currently working in Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe territory at the Centre for Teaching and Learning at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. She is also cross appointed in Queen’s University’s Dan School of Drama and Music. Robin supports teaching and learning development across campus among faculty, staff, and students; a large part of her work deals with ongoing efforts around decolonizing and indigenizing higher education in the Canadian nation-state. Robin remains active as a music theory researcher, presenting and publishing on topics including popular music analysis, music theory and social justice, decolonizing and indigenizing music theory teaching and research, and music theory pedagogy.
Jacob Hertzog
Jacob Hertzog is a critically acclaimed guitarist, composer and educator whose career to-date has spanned ten albums as bandleader across jazz, rock and classical new music styles. Hertzog is a grand prize winner of the Montreux Jazz Guitar Competition, holds a performance degree from Berklee College of Music and a master's degree from The Manhattan School of Music in New York. He is finishing his dissertation in higher education, studying how higher music education is adapting to the digital music industry. Other research includes data use in the music industry, equity in higher music education, and entrepreneurial pedagogy.
Thomas Rozinski
Tom Rozinski holds a B.A. summa cum laude from Yale University, an M.A. in Government from Harvard University, and a J.D. cum laude from Harvard Law School. He teaches courses on judicial politics, constitutional law, political theory, the Presidency, public administration, and international relations. Prof. Rozinski writes about political science pedagogy and prelaw education. His articles include “Using Music to Teach Political Theory,” PS: Political Science and Politics, and “Experiential Legal Writing Before Law School,” Journal of Experiential Learning.

Alex Ahn continues to play at colleges, and corporate shows in ways people would’ve never imagined the violin to sound. Time and time again, Alex Ahn shows the violin can be whatever you want it to be.
